Men's Basketball's Second-Half Rally Falls Short in Fairfax vs. Dayton, 67-54

GW found a home at George Mason's EagleBank Arena on Sunday afternoon with roads closed around its DC campus. The Buff and Blue hosted Dayton in Fairfax instead, marking the eighth time in the season's first 7 1/2 weeks that the team's resilience was tested in the face of a postponement or alteration to the opponent, time or venue.
Dayton connected on all three of its 3-pointers in the first four minutes of action to take an 11-2 lead into the first media timeout. Five more quick points out of the timeout gave the Flyers a 16-2 edge, but despite falling down by as many as 17 early, GW was determined to put up a fight.
The "hosts" clawed back to within 12 at the halftime break, and when Ricky Lindo Jr. finished a three-point play the old fashioned way at 6:44 to make it 51-47, the Buff and Blue were within four for the first time since Dayton's Jalen Crutcher made a 5-2 ballgame an 8-2 game in the opening minutes. Crutcher answered again though to put Dayton back up six, and then after the teams traded baskets, he hit a backbreaking 3 to make the Flyers' lead nine, 58-49, with 4:35 to play. GW could get no closer, and the Flyers closed out for the 67-54 win in a contest that got much closer than the final score indicated.
The matchup of the second- and third-leading scorers in the A-10 didn't disappoint, as James Bishop finished with 17 to lead GW, while Crutcher had a game-high 23. Lindo (13) and Sloan Seymour (10) finished in double figures for GW, but despite getting some good looks, the shots weren't falling in Mason's big, empty gym. The Buff and Blue finished 18-of-49 (.367) from the floor, including 4-of-19 from deep, with Jamison Battle -- last year's top 3-point man in the A-10 -- sidelined.
Tyler Brelsford drew the start for GW to make his first career appearance in the starting line-up; a well-earned nod after the frosh racked up eight points, five rebounds and three assists against VCU on Wednesday.
The sledding doesn't get any easier for GW as it now heads into its most challenging stretch of the season. The Buff and Blue aren't scheduled to play another home game until Fordham comes to DC on Jan. 30. Up next for GW are these same Flyers in Dayton on Wednesday, before trips to Rhode Island (Jan. 24) and again here in Fairfax, but next time against George Mason on Jan. 27.
