Men's Basketball Returns In Style; Downs URI 78-70
2/21/2021 3:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball
When the GW men's basketball team last took the floor, the 2021 Presidential Inauguration had yet to happen. A full five weeks since the Buff and Blue last played on Jan. 17, the team hosted Rhode Island in a brunchtime affair on Sunday in Foggy Bottom. The lengthy Covid pause that GW endured left the home team with just seven recruited student-athletes on scholarship suited up against the Rams, and for the national TV audience, it was anyone's guess how the team would look after the long layoff and Covid return-to-play protocols.
Enter James Bishop, Jamison Battle and Ricky Lindo Jr., who took the guesswork out of the equation. The trio hit for 65 points on a combined 23-of-37 shooting, including 8-of-15 from long range. Logging heavy minutes with each playing 36+, they went full throttle to overcome a 68-63 deficit with 4:30 to play to end on a 15-2 run, evening GW's conference record at 3-3 with two games to play in the regular season.
Bishop's career-high 28-point outing was as efficient as it was prolific, with his 28 points coming on just 14 shots from the floor. Battle's 26 included seven in the closing spurt and a highlight reel buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the corner to send GW into halftime up one. Lindo, meanwhile, kept up his double-double ways with 11 points and 10 rebounds to maintain his double-digit averages through three games in Buff & Blue.
While GW's Big Three were the headliners, the contributions of first-year Noel Brown were as immense as he is. The true frosh out of Flint Hill High School and Leesburg, Va., went off in a season-best outing against a physical Rams' interior. In his career-high 20 minutes of action, Brown both bullied and finessed his way to eight points, four rebounds and three assists, showing the deftness of a seasoned big man.
With Lindo's game-high 10 rebounds leading the way, Hunter Dean grabbed seven boards in his first start for GW, and the team rebounding effort was enough to top Rhode Island on the glass, 34-32, after the Rams entered play today with the A-10's best rebounding unit. All eight who logged time for GW had at least one rebound and one assist, as the club's 18 assists on 27 made field goals greased the wheels on an offense that registered a beautiful 1.22 points per possession.
All things considered, the win was amongst the finest of Head Coach Jamion Christian's tenure. Next up for GDUB is a Revolutionary Rivalry clash across the Potomac at George Mason on Wednesday night. Tip time from EagleBank Arena is 6 p.m. live on MASN.
