GW slugger honored on preseason list for third time
OKLAHOMA CITY - George Washington graduate student Jenna Cone has been named to the Top-50 Watch List for the 2021 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, the organization announced Wednesday.
GW's first-ever Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and All-America selection in 2019, Cone has returned for a final season in Buff and Blue, aiming to add to her already decorated resume. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native enters the spring ranked third nationally among active student-athletes in career RBIs (203) and fourth in career home runs (56) with a chance to move onto the list of NCAA all-time leaders in both categories with a strong finish.
During the abbreviated 2020 season, Cone continued to pace the Colonials at the plate, posting a .386/.476/.671 slash line with six home runs and 16 RBIs over 24 games. She was honored as a CoSIDA Academic All-American before graduating in May with a Communication degree and opting to pursue a master's in Media & Strategic Communication as she utilizes her final season of NCAA eligibility.
As a junior, Cone became the program's first A-10 Player of the Year after setting career highs with 20 home runs and 67 RBIs to lead GW to a share of its first conference title and postseason berth. The slugging third baseman equaled a conference record while ranking 11th in the nation in long balls in 2019, and she also landed among the top 50 nationally in RBIs, hits (72), total bases (148), slugging percentage (.783) and on-base percentage (.490). The California native was honored as an All-American by Softball America for her excellence.
Cone heads into 2021 with a career slash line of .384/.484/.760 and standing as the program's all-time leader in home runs, RBIs, total bases (431), extra-base hits (98) and walks (96) while ranking second in hits (218) and runs scored (153).
Cone was the lone A-10 student-athlete recognized by USAÂ Softball on Wednesday. She was previously included on the preseason watch list in both 2018 and 2020.
Cone and the Colonials are set to begin the new season next month. The full spring schedule will be available soon.
