Men’s Basketball Falls in Front End of Back-to-Back with Duquesne, 75-63
1/2/2021 5:48:00 PM | Men's Basketball
In the front end of a rare college basketball back-to-back against the same opponent, the George Washington men's basketball team fell to Duquesne, 75-63, at the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday afternoon. Due to a COVID-related alteration in the Atlantic 10 schedule, the Buff and Blue will get another shot at the Dukes tomorrow at 2 p.m. looking to even the score.
GW scored the game's first five points as part of a quick start highlighted by a pair of ferocious jams from Hunter Dean, the second of which put the home club up, 13-8. Duquesne answered with a 12-0 run to assume a 20-13 edge, and while GDUB competed throughout and hung tough with the experienced Dukes who brought back all five starters from a season ago, GW's comparative inexperience playing together was a factor.
George Washington's lead guns did what's expected, as James Bishop scored 20 points for the eighth time in nine games this season. Fellow sophomore Jamison Battle netted 17, as the conference's top scoring duo kept up with their league-leading pace. Grad student Matt Moyer notched his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while harassing Duquesne's point guard Sincere Carry on defense. Carry found other weapons, however, as the Dukes had more than enough in reserve, placing five in double digits in scoring.
Free throw shooting spelled trouble for GW, as the squad left 14 points on the line in the 12-point setback, in a 12-of-26 shooting performance that the team will be eager to correct tomorrow. The rematch between Duquesne and GW tips off Sunday at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
