Slugger recognized for excellence on and off the softball diamond
WASHINGTON - Jenna Cone of GW softball has been named the athletic department's nominee for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
In recognition of her lofty standards on and off the diamond, Cone joins an impressive pool of candidates for the national accolade honoring the academic achievements, athletic excellence, community service work and leadership of graduating female student-athletes from all three divisions.
Cone was previously honored as GW's Lynn George Outstanding Senior Female Student-Athlete award for her efforts embodying the department's pillars of discipline and excellence throughout her time representing the Buff and Blue.
On the field, Cone's production is unmatched in GW softball history, helping spur the program to unprecedented success.
As a junior in 2019, Cone became the first Colonial to be named A-10 Player of the Year and earn All-America honors. She tied the A-10 single-season record with 20 home runs and broke her own program mark with 67 RBIs to help the Buff and Blue earn a share of their first conference title and advance to the NISC Liberty Regional.
A three-time All A-10 selection and NFCA All-Region honoree, Cone wrapped the shortened 2020 spring ranked among the top four nationally in both career home runs (56) and RBIs (203). She's also the program's all-time leader in extra-base hits (98), total bases (431), slugging percentage (.760) and on-base percentage (.484).
Last month, Cone, along with teammate Jessica Linquist, was honored as a CoSIDA Academic All-American.
For her work in the classroom, she's been a regular on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, earning a 3.37 cumulative GPA on the way to a Communication degree. She's also a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association's official honor society.
In the community, Cone has been active in GW softball's service efforts, particularly with DC Keen, which provides sports and recreational opportunities for youth with significant developmental and physical disabilities.
Cone plans to continue her studies at GW, seeking a master's degree in Media & Strategic Communication.
The A-10's Senior Woman Administrators will vote among 15 nominees from across the conference to select the two student-athletes who will represent the conference among the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year finalists.
