Colonial hurler strikes out eight over 8.0 innings
ARLINGTON, Va. - Redshirt sophomore Harrison Cohen silenced Monmouth over 8.0 superb innings, helping lead GW baseball to a 2-0 blanking of the Hawks on Friday afternoon.
Cohen cruised through his 111-pitch outing, not putting a runner in scoring position until the sixth inning. He erased a leadoff single in the second with a double play and then set down 10 in a row after a one-out single in the third.
Nursing a 2-0 lead, Cohen picked up a big backwards K in the top of the sixth, stranding a two-out double in scoring position. The redshirt sophomore finished seven innings for the first time in his career with the help of a second twin-killing before battling through the eighth.
After hitting a batter with one down and surpassing 100 pitches on the day, Cohen reared back and authored back-to-back strikeouts, his seventh and eighth of the day, to punctuate the outing.
Cohen's eight strikeouts were one shy of his career-high set on Feb. 14, while he scattered four hits without allowing a walk to earn his second win of the year.
Junior Trevor Kuncl pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to earn his fourth save.
GW got all the offense it would need on a solo homer from junior Tyler Hix in the bottom of the fourth, his first long ball of the year. Sophomore Cade Fergus manufactured a run an inning later with a double before stealing third and coming home on a throwing error.
Sophomore Noah Levin extended his hitting streak to seven in a row with his second straight three-hit day. Hix added a pair of knocks, including the dinger.
The Colonials will look for the series win on Saturday in the middle game of the set. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
