Colonials honored for academic excellence
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Moritz Fath and Peter Nachtwey of GW men's swimming and diving have earned Atlantic 10 All-Academic honors, the conference announced Thursday.
The recognition comes after the pair shined at last month's A-10 Championships with Fath honored as Most Outstanding Performer for the second time and Nachtwey taking repeat Most Outstanding Diver honors.
It's the 10th consecutive season that GW has landed multiple All-Academic honorees.
"Moritz and Peter have left an indelible mark on our conference with their efforts at the championship meet," GW head coach Brian Thomas said. "In addition to their ability in the water and on the boards, they continue to set a phenomenal example in the classroom.
Our academic advising staff, led by Danya Ellman and Kate Whitaker, works very hard to ensure that our student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in both athletics and academics - I know that Mo and Pete are thankful for their support. In addition, (assistant coach) Katie Stefl and (head diving coach) Wes Mattice deserve a ton of credit having coached and mentored these two phenomenal people on a daily basis."
An International Business major who holds a 3.61 GPA, Fath closed his collegiate career in spectacular fashion, earning seven A-10 medals with five of them gold in his final trip to the conference meet to help the Colonials finish runner-up in the team standings.
The senior from Germany earned individual gold in the 100 free, 200 free and 500 free and was also part of wins in the 800 free and 400 free relays in claiming the meet's highest individual honor for the second straight season. He finished his decorated career with 20 A-10 medals, including 15 golds, and he'll graduate holding conference records in both the 200 free and 500 free.
Throughout his decorated run in Buff and Blue, Fath has continued to shine in the classroom, as well. He's a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American pick, and he was previously honored on the 2018 A-10 All-Academic Team.
An International Affairs major with a 3.71 GPA, Nachtwey cemented his status as the A-10's top diver with a win on 3-meter (330.30) and a fourth-place showing on 1-meter (279.55) at the recent conference championships. For his career, the junior from Ohio has secured five podium finishes (two golds, three silvers) in three trips to the A-10 meet.
Last week, Nachtwey closed out his season last week by competing at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships for the third time, highlighted by a 13th-place finish on platform vs. a decorated field.
It's the second straight A-10 All-Academic nod for Nachtwey, who is also a two-time CSCAA Scholar All-America honoree.
Those academic accolades are in addition to GW's impressive collection of honors earned at the A-10 Championships where the women won their first-ever conference crown.
The Colonials completed their climb to the top of the women's standings led by nine All A-10 honorees. Meghan Burton, Andrea Ho, Andrea Moussier, Stine Omdahl Petersen and Rebecca Smolcic landed gold to make the All-Conference First Team, while Gemma Atherley, Becca Brown, Grace Olivardia and Jackie Torrez picked up silver and All-Conference Second Team recognition.
On the men's side, Fath, Nachtwey, Dylan Arzoni, George Aspougalis, Haoning Chen, Tyler Kawakami and Youssef Ragab garnered All-Conference First Team honors. Andrew Cho, DH Hwang, Josh Legge and James Torrez made the All-Conference Second Team.
