Colonials make strides in Chapel Hill with a 195.500
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The George Washington gymnastics team put together a solid team performance on Friday evening at North Carolina, finishing just behind the host Tarheels 196.325-195.550 under the bright lights of Carmichael Arena.
The Colonials earned their 195.550 behind team scores of 48.625 on vault, 48.950 on bars, 48.900 on beam, and 49.025 on floor. The 195.500 marked the team's third score above the 195.000 threshold this season.
In her third meet competing in the all-around, Deja Chambliss topped the podium with a 39.025. After scoring a 9.450 on bars, the sophomore bounced back on vault, matching her career-high with a 9.875. Chambliss continued her momentum on floor with a career-high matching 9.875. The Chesterfield, Va., native capped her night with a tied for first place score of 9.825 on beam.
ROTATION ONE
The Buff and Blue got their start on bars, finishing with a 48.950. Junior Rachel Kaplan and sophomore Simone Banen topped the team with matching 9.825s to share the top spot on podium. For Kaplan, the 9.825 marked a season- and career-high. Olivia Raymond followed closely behind with a 9.800 to finish third, while Anna Warhol and Katya Karpova posted identical 9.750s to wrap the first rotation.
ROTATION TWO
The Colonials moved to vault for rotation two, where they posted a 48.625. Chambliss matched her career-high 9.875 to pace the squad and finish second on the podium, while Cydney Crasa earned her sixth score of a 9.800 or higher with a 9.800. Warhol posed a 9.700, Olivia Norman earned a 9.650, and Katherine Shek finished with a 9.600 to add to GW's score.
ROTATION THREE
GW took to floor for the third rotation, posting their second-straight score above the 49.000 threshold with a 49.025. Chambliss continued her momentum on floor with a team-high and career-high matching 9.875, a score that placed her third on the podium. Crasa also performed a beautiful floor routine to earn a 9.850, her sixth floor score above a 9.800 this season. Warhol earned a 9.800 along with Kaplan. For Kaplan, the 9.800 marked a season-high. Raymond, returning to the floor lineup for the first time since Feb. 8, posted a 9.700 to conclude rotation three.
ROTATION FOUR
The squad wrapped its night on beam, finishing with a 48.900. The duo of Hannah Cohen and Chambliss led the way with matching 9.825s to share the top spot on the podium. Raymond posted a 9.775, Bannen earned a 9.750, and the pair of Zona and Crasa posted matching 9.725s to cap the Colonials' night.
UP NEXT: The Colonials will kick off competition in March with a pair of meets. The squad will first make the short trip to Towson for tri-meet action with Maryland on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m. before hosting the Tigers and Terps along with Yale and William & Mary for Senior Day on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m.
