Raimo, Callaghan and Edwards strike out nine in five-hitter
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball once again rode strong performances on the hill to an early-season victory, silencing Marist, 3-1, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Senior Elliot Raimo, making his second start of the week, worked around a pair of early baserunners in the first before settling in nicely, limiting the Red Foxes to just a solo home run in 5.1 innings of work.
Raimo retired seven of the final eight hitters he faced en route to his second victory of the season. In total, he allowed a run on three hits, striking out four and walking two.
A pair of runners reached against junior Jeb Callaghan with two outs in the sixth before the Colonials turned to senior Jaret Edwards, who recorded the biggest out of the game with a three-pitch backwards K to keep GW in front.
Edwards was dynamic in his 3.1 innings of relief, striking out the first three batters he faced, and five overall, to record his fourth career save.
GW's offense was economical with its chances, scoring on RBI groundouts from senior Steve Barmakian in the first and sophomore Noah Levin in the third.
The Buff & Blue took advantage of a two-out error in the sixth inning to plate an insurance tally via an RBI single from first-year Joe Biancone, giving them the 3-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
GW's six-game homestand continues with a pair of midweek matinees at the Tuck, with UMBC visiting on Tuesday and Coppin State coming to town on Wednesday. Both games are set for 2:30 p.m. first pitches.
