Colonials finished second in the team standings
GENEVA, Ohio - George Washington men's swimming and diving went 1-2 in a pair of events Saturday, part of a seven-medal haul on a stirring final night at the A-10 Championships.
Moritz Fath and Tyler Kawakami earned gold and silver, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle before George Aspougalis and Youssef Ragab repeated the feat in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Behind those efforts, the Colonials battled to the final swim before finishing runner-up in the team standings. They totaled 637.5 points over four days at SPIRE Institute to end up just behind champion George Mason (657).
GW had its run of three straight A-10 titles come to a close, but the Colonials still collected plenty of hardware throughout the week, earning 18 medals, including eight golds.
Fath was named Most Outstanding Performer for the second straight season after winning three individual golds, plus four relay medals with two golds and two silvers.
Peter Nachtwey was named Most Outstanding Diver for the second straight year after winning a repeat title on the 3-meter diving board on Saturday night with a finals score of 330.30.
That success, plus a 3-meter A final appearance from first-year Spencer Bystrom and a 10th-place showing from Nick Tomczyk, helped head diving coach Wesley Mattice earn Diving Coach of the Year honor.
On Saturday, Fath closed out a tremendous career at the A-10 Championships with his first-ever win in the 100 free. He touched in 44.31 seconds with Kawakami right behind in 44.34, and Dylan Arzoni won the B final in 45.01.
All three Colonials, along with Youssef Ragab, were part of GW's gold-medal swim in the 400-yard freestyle relay to close the night in a time of 2:57.62.
Aspougalis put together a record-breaking swim in the 200 breast, touching in 1:56.28 to snap the A-10 mark previously held by former GW NCAA qualifier Andrea Bolognesi. Ragab was two seconds back to share silver with Hylton Collinson of St. Bonaventure. The pair had previously gone 1-2 in the 100 breast, as well.
James Torrez also took down a program record in the 200-yard butterfly, bettering Oliver Keegan's four-year-old program record during prelims by going 1:47.43. The sophomore from California touched sixth in the evening championship final.
To start the night, DH Hwang landed silver in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The sophomore followed up last season's bronze effort by finishing runner-up in 15:28.26. Josh Legge was fourth in 15:35.67 with Brendan Conley (seventh), Zach Hu (15th) and Ian Molloy (16th) also scoring.
Ryan Patterson led the Colonials in the 200-yard backstroke with an eighth-place finish in a personal-best time of 1:48.03 after qualifying for the A final. Andrew Cho (10th) and Kaden Schwaiger (13th) were in the B final.
