GW junior makes third trip to NCAA qualifying meet
George Washington's Peter Nachtwey will continue his season at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, beginning Monday at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W. Va.
After being named Most Outstanding Diver at the Atlantic 10 Championships last month for the second time, the junior from Ohio is set to compete individually at the three-day meet aiming to qualify for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held March 25-28 in Indianapolis.
The Zone meet consists of a preliminary round and finals on a different board each day. The men will contest 3-meter, 1-meter and then platform with five, six and four NCAA berths available, respectively.
Nachtwey clinched his third trip to the Zone meet with an exceptional effort on Jan. 18 vs. Georgetown. He hit the NCAA qualifying standards on both boards in GW's home finale with 308.20 on 1-meter and 328.40 on 3-meter.Â
Nachtwey carried that momentum into championship season by earning the top diving honor at the conference meet for the second straight season. He claimed his second straight gold on the 3-meter board (330.30) and also landed a fourth-place finish on 1-meter (279.55).
Last season at the NCAA qualifying meet, Nachtwey put together a record-breaking showing on platform en route to a 10th-place finish. He totaled 507.75 points over 12 dives at Navy's Lejeune Hall, including a score of 271.35 in the final round to eclipse his own six-dive program record.
Nachtwey also placed 25th on 1-meter and 31st on 3-meter in 2019.
As he challenges the region's best this time, Nachtwey has recent experience on the boards at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park after competing there in a dual meet vs. West Virginia on Feb. 1.
