PITTSBURGH — Seniors Arnaldo Toro and Armel Potter delivered double-doubles, and the GW men's basketball team picked up a crucial road win at Duquesne, 70-67, on Wednesday evening at PPG Paints Arena.
Toro finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds (nine defensive) in 33 minutes off the bench, dominating in the paint on both ends of the court. Potter dropped 11 points and 10 dimes along with six fouls drawn for the Colonials' second road victory in five days.
Junior Maceo Jack led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-12 from the field with four 3-pointers. First-years Jamison Battle (11) and Jameer Nelson Jr. (10) also scored in double figures and combined for 13 rebounds in the win.
After trailing 23-17, the Colonials went on 14-0 run in just over five minutes of play to take a 31-23 advantage with 4:06 left in the first half.
The Dukes answered back with nine straight points, but Toro and Nelson Jr. scored the last two baskets of the half to put GW ahead 35-32 at the break.
In the second half, Toro pushed GW's lead to eight (48-40) on a second chance putback after he pulled down a rebound off his initial shot with 14:56 left.
The lead reached double figures (52-42) at the 12-minute mark after a long-range bucket by Jack off a nice feed from Potter.
With GW holding a 62-48 lead, the Dukes went on a nine-point run and erased the double-digit deficit before Potter stopped the spurt with a 3-pointer at the 2:59 mark.
Duquesne had a chance to tie the game late, but missed opportunities and put the Colonials at the line with the opportunity to seal the victory.
Marcus Weathers led Duquesne with 19 points and was one of four Dukes in double figures.
GW returns to the Smith Center on Saturday against La Salle at 4 p.m. The first 500 fans inside the Smith Center will receive a free George Washington birthday t-shirt.
