Former Pitt guard to be eligible for Colonials next season
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball head coach Jennifer Rizzotti announced the addition of Jasmine Whitney to the program as a graduate transfer for the 2020-21 campaign.
Whitney recently graduated with a degree in Psychology from Pittsburgh and has enrolled at GW for the spring semester. She will be eligible to compete next season per NCAA transfer regulations.
"We are so excited to welcome Jasmine to our GW family and back home to the DMV," Rizzotti said. "She brings tremendous experience on the court, playing in almost 100 games, including more than 50 in the ACC, and will help reinforce our team in myriad ways.
"She will help us as a decision-maker, perimeter scorer, defender and veteran leader on the court and off. Coming from a basketball family, I know Jasmine will be hungry for a successful finish to her career."
A native of nearby Centreville, Va., Whitney appeared in 91 games during her three years at Pitt, starting 75 as one of the top guards in program history. She led the Panthers in assists for three straight years and is ninth in program annals with 374 assists (4.1/game). At the time of her departure, she was the only active player in the ACC to record three straight seasons of 100+ assists.
Additionally, the 5-foot-9 guard ranks 10th in Pitt's all-time record book with 162 steals (1.8/game), leading the team each of her last two campaigns. She set a new career high with 9.6 points per game last year, reaching double figures 13 times with a pair of 20-point performances.
"I'm so excited to join the GW basketball program and to be able to come in and get situated with the team, staff and system right away," Whitney said. "When I came on my visit, everything just felt like the right fit. The coaches, support staff and players were all easy to talk to and get along with.
"Everyone felt really genuine, and I was able to tell this was the right environment for me to be in for the end of my career. I look forward to the opportunities given to me by the coaching staff, and I'm excited to get back to playing and winning."
For her career, Whitney averaged 7.8 ppg and played over 30 minutes per game in each of her last two campaigns. She was named to the ACC All-Academic team as a junior after previously earning two ACC Rookie of the Week designations during her freshman campaign. She also served as team captain during her sophomore season.
"We are fortunate to have her join us for the Spring 2020 semester, during which she can acclimate herself to our team and staff, while getting started in her graduate studies," Rizzotti said. "Most importantly, Jasmine is a great person, and similar to our current and past graduate transfers, we're confident she'll be a mature influence on our younger players. This is a great addition."
Whitney joins a strong tradition of graduate transfers in recent years for GW. In addition to this year's pair of Alexandra Maund (Yale) and Ariel Stephenson (Wake Forest), the Colonials have welcomed in Lexi Martins (GW '17/Lehigh) and Taylor Campbell (GW '18/Lehigh) for successful graduate campaigns in Rizzotti's tenure.
