Women’s Soccer Edges Liberty in Home Opener

Colonials improve to 2-1
WASHINGTON — In its first game of the 2019 season on home turf, the George Washington women's soccer team edged Liberty, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon.
After going into the break tied up at one, the Colonials came out hot in the second half with a pair of goals just four minutes apart to put them out front. Liberty began to push on attack and was able to slip one past the GW back line, but the Colonials held their ground for the final seven minutes of play to finish the day with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 5th Minute – After two early shots, the Colonials were the first on the board with a goal off the corner kick. Sammy Neyman took the corner, while three-year captain Megan McCormick headed the ball in a scramble into the back of the net. GW 1, LU 0
• 23rd Minute - After a back-and-forth battle, the Flames were able to even the score with a goal from Kasey Jamieson. GW 1, LU 1
• 51st Minute - GW got its second tally of the day when Sofia Pavon crossed the ball in front of the cage, giving Madi Coyne the chance to tip it in beyond the reach of the Liberty keeper. GW 2, LU 1
• 55th Minute - The Colonials found the back of the net just four minutes later off a Liberty own goal. Rachel Sorkenn crossed the ball to Pavon, but the ball instead deflected off a Flames' defender and into the net. GW 3, LU 1
• 83rd Minute - With the clock quickly ticking down, Liberty began to apply offensive pressure and was able to get one last goal past the GW back line.
NOTEWORTHY
• Brianna Garcia, Monique Perrier and Deena DeSilva all made their first 2019 appearances on the pitch for the Buff and Blue.
• Keeper Tamaki Machi made a season-high eight saves, while Flames' keeper Melody Jayroe made five.
• Two of GW's three goals were scored by defenders. McCormick registered her third career goal against Liberty, while Coyne tallied her first.

The first 100 fans wearing Buff and Blue will also get a FREE GW water bottle. In addition, the women's soccer squad will warm up in blue shirts to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
