Women’s Soccer Tops La Salle in A-10 Opener

Colonials improve to 5-1-2
PHILADELPHIA – The George Washington women's soccer squad opened Atlantic 10 action in fine fashion on Sunday afternoon, defeating La Salle, 3-1, at McCarthy Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 28th Minute – After rattling off four shots to open the day, GW was able to break through the Explorers' back line with a goal from Allie Nornes, her first of the season. GW 1, LAS 0
• 41st Minute – The Colonials continued to press on attack and were able to pad their lead with a tally from Isabelle Eskay, her second goal in as many games. GW 2, LAS 0
• 60th Minute – Even with a two-goal lead, the squad did not back down as Maria Pareja weaved through the La Salle defense and shot the ball beyond the reach of the Explorers' keeper. GW 3, LAS 0
• 66th Minute – La Salle got on the board with a goal from Danielle Rooney. GW 3, LAS 1
NOTEWORTHY
• Pareja has now scored in four straight games. In that span, the sophomore has put 10 of her 11 shots on goal.
• Keeper Tamaki Machi faced 13 shots and made six saves on Sunday afternoon.
• GW outshot La Salle 17-13, while the Explorers held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
• Through eight games, the squad is outshooting its opponents by a 150-76 margin.
• Rachel Sorkenn paced the team with a season-high six shots, two of which came on goal.
UP NEXT: GW will return home to host Fordham on Thursday, Sept. 26, for a 3 p.m. kickoff at the GW Soccer Field before hitting the road to face Rhode Island on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m.
