Women’s Soccer Hits Stride in A-10 Play

Colonials host Fordham on Thursday, travel to Rhode Island Sunday
KICKING OFF: After back-to-back victories on the road last week, the George Washington women's soccer squad is set to return to the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Thursday to host Fordham for a 3 p.m. kickoff. GW will then head back out on the road to face Rhode Island on Sunday at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials (5-1-2, 1-0 A-10) kicked off Atlantic 10 action on a high note on Sunday afternoon, topping La Salle, 3-1, at McCarthy Stadium. Keeper Tamaki Machi faced 13 shots and made six saves on the day while the GW offensive unit outshot the Explorers, 17-13. Through eight games, the team is outshooting its opponents by a 150-76 margin.
HOME COOKIN': GW boasts a 2-0-2 record at the GW Soccer Field. The Colonials have edged Liberty (3-2) and Bucknell (2-1), and played Maryland (1-1) and Towson (2-2) to a draw so far this season.
A-10 HONORS: Maria Pareja earned A-10 Co-Player of the Week honors after recording a goal in each of GW's victories, extending her scoring streak to four straight games. Against the Retrievers, the sophomore scored the go-ahead goal, along with assisting on the game-tying goal early in the match. The Fairfax, Va., product also tallied her fifth goal of the season in a 3-1 victory against La Salle to open conference play. The sophomore paces the team with 11 points (5g, 1a) and has put 15 of her 17 shots on goal this season.
ESKAY EXCELS: First-year Isabelle Eskay scored her first career goal at UMBC on Thursday before registering her second just three days later at La Salle. The Damascus, Md., product has seen action in all eight contests and ranks second on the team with her 85.7 shots on goal percentage.
ABOUT FORDHAM: The Rams (2-6-2, 1-0 A-10) split their matches last week, falling to Stony Brook on Thursday, 1-0 (OT), before topping St. Bonaventure in their conference opener, 1-0. Fordham has struggled offensively so far in 2019, having only scored five goals. The squads sit even in the series at 7-7-4.
ABOUT RHODE ISLAND: Rhode Island (3-4-2, 0-1 A-10) will look to snap its three-game losing skid as it faces Dayton on the road on Thursday before hosting the Colonials on Sunday. GW holds a slight 13-12-2 advantage in the series, with the Buff and Blue last coming out on top, 1-0, in 2017.
ON DECK: The Colonials will continue A-10 action next week by hosting Massachusetts on Thursday at the GW Soccer Field at 3 p.m. before heading down to Richmond to face the Spiders on Sunday at 3 p.m.
