Colonials to partake in Creeds & Crests Classic at Texas State
WASHINGTON -Â GW volleyball will wrap up its non-conference tournament slate this weekend in San Marcos, Texas, taking part in the Creeds & Crests Classic hosted by Texas State. The Buff & Blue will battle Sam Houston State (12 p.m.) and the host Bobcats (8 p.m.) on Friday before finishing the weekend against UTSA at noon on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT:Â The Colonials picked up three sweeps in three days as part of a busy four-match slate last weekend. GW earned neutral-site triumphs over Norfolk State and USC Upstate prior to returning home and sweeping Albany on Sunday.
Senior Jaimeson Lee and sophomore Bella Bowman were named to the Pirate Invitational All-Tournament team for their efforts in the first three games of the weekend. Lee recorded double-doubles in three straight games, crossing the 30-assist threshold twice. Bowman recorded a season-high 17 digs against USC Upstate on Saturday and has now posted double-digit digs in nine of 10 matches this year.
ACROSS THE NET:Â This weekend provides an unorthodox opportunity for the Colonials, facing three rarely, if ever, seen opponents. The only previous match came vs Texas State in 1988.
The Bearkats of Sam Houston State are 3-6 on the year, going 1-2 in each of their first three tournaments. The Kats are hitting .220 as a team, led by outside hitter Ashley Lewis, who leads the team with 3.51 kills per set while hitting .218. Overall, the top six attackers for Sam Houston State are all hitting over .200. SHSU was projected to finish third in the Southland Conference preseason poll.
Texas State is 5-5 following a 2-1 weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational last week. The Bobcats are led by 40th-year head coach Karen Chisum, who earned her 900th career win last weekend, becoming just the fifth Division I coach in NCAA history to accomplish the feat at one school. Texas State is the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt and is led by outside hitter Cheyenne Huskey, who tops the team with 3.22 kills per set.
UTSA enters the weekend on a four-match winning streak following a 3-0 weekend at the Tulsa Tournament and a home victory against Incarnate Word. Brianna McCulloch leads the Roadrunners with 3.5 kills per set with outside hitter Hanna Lopez contributing 3.06 kills per set for a team that hits .227 overall. The Roadrunners were projected fifth in the preseason Conference USA poll.
WELCOME HOME:Â This weekend serves as an opportunity for GW to bring Lee back near her hometown of Austin, Texas. The senior setter has had a remarkable year thus far, eclipsing the 2,000-assist mark for her career earlier this month. Lee has totaled more than 20 assists in each match and is currently fifth in the A-10 in assists per set (8.74) and total assists (297).
ACE IN THE HOLE:Â Graduate student Paty Valle's progression with her new serve has grown each week, a mark emphasized by her league-leading 0.64 aces per set this year. Valle's 16 total aces rank third in the A-10, but her impact has been most felt at the net, where she is averaging 1.28 blocks per set, good for fifth in the league and second on the team, trailing only graduate student Caroline Sklaver (1.38).
