Colonials wrap up weekend with UTSA on Saturday
SAN MARCOS, Texas - GW volleyball opened the Creeds & Crests Classic on Friday afternoon with a stirring fifth-set comeback against Sam Houston State before succumbing to host Texas State in the nightcap of the final non-conference tournament of the season.

Key Stats
• The Colonials racked up their first five-set win of the year, improving to 1-1 in matches that go the distance this season.
• GW had a season-high 60 kills in the match, led by senior Skylar Iott's 26, two off her career high. Iott set a new career-high with 30 points thanks to a career-best six block assists and an ace. She also notched her fifth double-double of the year with 16 digs.
• Senior Jaimeson Lee, in her return to her home state, posted her fifth double-double of the campaign with 44 assists and 15 digs in addition to six kills and four block assists.
• Graduate student Paty Valle finished a dig shy of a double-double with 11 kills and nine digs, also adding four block assists.
• GW racked up 16.5 blocks as a team, a season-best. First-year Addie Feek had a team-high nine blocks (one solo).
• On the back line, sophomore Bella Bowman tallied a season-best 28 digs with junior Sydney Welch contributing 11.

• Iott was the catalyst to GW's opening-set victory, recording seven kills without an error. Sophomore Paz Dozie-Nnamah added five of her nine kills to lead GW to 18 as a team in the set with a .268 attack percentage.
• Tied at 23, Iott and Dozie-Nnamah registered back-to-back kills to close the set.

• GW's block came alive in the second set with 6.0 team rejections in the stanza, four coming from Feek.
• The Bearkats were errorless otherwise, though, and used a 5-0 spurt to take a 20-14 lead they would not relinquish to even the match.

• GW roared out of the gates following intermission, scoring nine of the first 11 points, capped off on a kill from Lee.
• SHSU got no closer than four in the set as the Colonials racked up 12 kills and hit .171 with Iott's five kills leading the way.

• The back-and-forth nature of the match continued in the fourth as the Kats hit .283 with 18 kills to force the decisive fifth set.
• GW trailed by as many as seven midway through the frame, but closed to within two on a pair of occasions, including 24-22. A block error thwarted the comeback attempt and sent the match to a fifth set.

• Despite trailing 12-8, GW showed true determination in finishing the match on an incredible 8-2 run to swipe the victory.
• The Buff & Blue faced a pair of match points while trailing 14-12 before capitalizing on a pair of Sam Houston State errors to even things at 14. Graduate student Caroline Sklaver gave GW the lead with a service ace prior to Feek and Lee teaming up on a block to ice the match.

Key Stats
• The Colonials unable were to slow down the host Bobcats, who hit an astounding .434 with just six attack errors on the night.
• Lee added 15 more assists and nine digs in the setback. Iott paced the Colonials with seven kills while Valle added six.

• GW held an early 9-6 lead thanks to a combo block from Sklaver and Lee, but would only score four points the rest of the way.
• Texas State ran off four straight points to take the lead for good, ultimately finishing the set on a 19-4 run.

• Another large run did in the Colonials as a 7-1 burst put the Buff & Blue behind, 13-7.
• Three straight kills, two from Valle and another from Feek, closed GW's gap late in the set, but it wasn't enough to even the match.

• The Bobcats continued their hot-hitting ways with a .480 clip in the final stanza.
• A big run again was the difference as Texas State scored 12 straight to break a 9-9 deadlock and effectively finish off the match.
