GW opens conference play next Saturday against George Mason

SAN MARCOS, Texas - GW volleyball wrapped up its final non-conference tournament of the year on Saturday, dropping a three-set match to UTSA at the Creeds & Crests Classic.

Key Stats

• For the second straight match, the Colonials' opponent had a tremendous attacking day as the Roadrunners racked up 46 kills and hit .340.

• GW notched seven blocks as a team, four from first-year Addie Feek. Sophomore Bella Bowman (three) and graduate student Paty Valle (two) showcased a strong serve with five combined aces.

• Valle led the Colonials with seven kills in 19 attempts, hitting .211. Fellow graduate student Caroline Sklaver had six kills in 21 swings, attacking at a team-best .417.

How It Happened

Set 1: UTSA 25, GW 14

• The Roadrunners came sprinting out of the gate, hitting .407 with just two attack errors to pull away with the first set victory.

• A service error drew GW within five, 17-12, but UTSA rattled off six straight, and eight of the final 10 points, to secure the win.

Set 2: UTSA 25, GW 20

• GW was able to get its block going in the second set, tallying six of its seven rejections as a team in the stanza.

• However, the Roadrunners were able to record 17 kills to GW's five in the set, giving them the edge to finish on an 8-2 run to claim the frame.

Set 3: UTSA 25, GW 18

• UTSA's attack finished with a flourish, hitting .517 with 16 kills against just one error to finish off the match.

• The Colonials had their best attacking set of the day, hitting .250 with 10 kills. Bowman secured all three of her aces in succession to bring GW within five, 15-10, before the Roadrunners held on for the triumph.

• The Buff & Blue now turn their attention to conference play, which opens next Saturday at the Smith Center against George Mason. First serve is set for 5 p.m. with an alumni reception and the first Wine Down event of the year preceding the match at 4 p.m. in the Champions Club.
