In a last-chance qualifier, two more Colonials qualified for next weekend’s MAISA Championship
The GW sailing team will send four sailors to the MAISA Singlehanded Championship after Owen Timms and Michael Ehnot earned spots in the field with top-six finishes at a Laser Eliminator at Navy last weekend.
Teammates Soenke Jordan and Cameron Feves had already qualified with their results at the Laser South on Sept. 7-8. The quartet will be among 18 sailors competing at next weekend's conference championship, which also serves as a qualifier for nationals.
Timms, a first-year from Olympia, Washington, comfortably qualified with a steady performance to finish in third place. He was in the top-third of the field for nine of 14 races, including a pair of wins. Ehnot, a sophomore, needed a clutch finish to grab the last qualifying spot and came through with a second-place result in the final race to move into sixth place.
"Owen showed he's going to be a really big contributor to the team," said head coach Billy Martin. "To have that steady of a performance as a first-year was really impressive. Michael was in a high-pressure situation, going into the last race of the regatta outside of qualifying by a couple of points, and he got the job done in the final race. That's really invaluable experience to come through in that type of situation."
The Colonials were also in competition with a contingent at the Chesapeake Invitational hosted by St. Mary's, where they entered three boats. Marshall McCraw and Michael Houllahan continued a strong start to the year for the coed squad by taking first place in the seven-race regatta. Ryan Janov and Clare Cassidy-Gardner finished 9th, and Islay Van Dusen and Chiara Perotti Correa took 11th.
GW will be back in the water for two regattas next weekend, competing in the MAISA Top 9 Fleet Race at Cornell in addition to the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship at Navy.
