Colonials look to earn a third straight win
The Colonials (2-2-1) seek a third straight victory as they host the Retrievers (2-3) in a 3 p.m. start.
LAST TIME OUT: Max Holdsworth and Sandro Weber scored first-half goals Saturday in GW's 2-0 win over Brown to open its home slate.
GW's defense didn't allow a shot on goal until the 66th minute in its third clean sheet of the season. Justin Grady made three saves to keep the Bears off the scoreboard.
MAX EFFORT: Holdsworth put together a fantastic week, contributing to all five goals GW scored over a pair of wins.
The senior from England converted a penalty kick and also set up a pair of goals last Tuesday in a 3-0 win over Liberty. On Saturday, he buried a fourth-minute penalty kick and then added an assist on Weber's goal in the 24th minute.
With a team-leading seven points, Holdsworth has eclipsed his total from last fall when he had four points in his first season in Buff and Blue. His seven assists since the start of the 2018 season are the most for any Colonial in that span.
A transfer who played his first two seasons at American, Holdsworth has 28 points via seven goals and 14 assists over 56 collegiate appearances.
NEW IN NET: Grady, a first-year from Pennsylvania, has recorded three shutouts through his first five starts, posting 19 saves vs. five goals allowed.
Grady has performed well in net replacing the graduated Thor Arne Höfs. The newcomer ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in shutouts, fourth in save percentage (.792) and fifth in goals against average (.957).
Entering play Tuesday, Grady has not allowed a goal over his last 185 minutes in net.
SCOUTING UMBC: The Retrievers scored three times in the opening 13 minutes and rolled to a 5-1 win over LIU on Saturday. It was an impressive offensive showing for a squad that had scored a combined three goals over its first four contests.
Ryan Becher and Tre Pulliam have scored two goals apiece to lead UMBC.
This is the fifth straight season GW and UMBC have met in non-conference action. The Retrievers earned a 3-1 win in the most recent meeting last October.
UP NEXT: GW closes out the homestand Saturday with a visit from defending conference champion Rhode Island on Colonials Weekend. It's another 3 p.m. kickoff on the Vern.
