Colonials beat Santa Clara before falling to St. Francis Brooklyn
PRINCETON, N.J. - GW men's water polo split a doubleheader Saturday to open the Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool.
The 15th-ranked Colonials knocked off Santa Clara, 15-7, before dropping the nightcap to No. 17 St. Francis Brooklyn, 10-6.
Andrew Mavis led the Buff and Blue with seven goals on the day, including a team-high five scores in the defeat of Santa Clara.
GW 15, Santa Clara 7: GW used a second-half surge that included nine straight goals to beat the Broncos.
Santa Clara scored first out of the break to tie it at 6-6, but the Colonials followed with an impressive answer.
Mavis netted the go-ahead goal with 4:57 left in the third quarter and then added the next two to build the lead.
The Buff and Blue made it 10-6 by the end of the third and then tallied the first five of the final period, as well. Mavis' goal with 3:54 left stretched the advantage to 15-6.
Mavis tallied four of his five goals in the second-half run, while Andras Levai notched all three of his during that stretch.
Jordan Blosser and Antonin Kralj scored two goals apiece with Nick Schroeder totaling a goals and three assists. Henry Maas and Gabriele Simonti scored in the victory, too.
Atakan Destici recorded a season-high five assists and also tied for a team high with three steals.
Taylor accumulated 19 saves to top his previous best of 18 stops set a week ago vs. Salem.
St. Francis Brooklyn 10, GW 6: The Terriers grabbed control with a 5-0 run midway through the second half to deal the Colonials their first setback of the season.
After GW edged within 5-3 on Levai's goal with 5:36 left in the third, St. Francis Brooklyn pulled away with the next five scores.
Levai and Mavis scored two goals apiece in the second game with Maas and Simonti also finding the net.
Taylor notched 15 saves vs. the Terriers.
UP NEXT: GW wraps the weekend by facing two more ranked foes on Sunday. The Colonials will take on No. 19 Brown at 10:30 a.m. before meeting the tournament host, No. 12 Princeton, at 3:30 p.m.
