Colonials outshot the Tigers, 30-7
WASHINGTON – On a hot afternoon at the GW Soccer Field at the Mount Vernon Campus, the George Washington women's soccer squad battled Towson to a double overtime 2-2 draw.
Trailing by one with three minutes to play, the Colonials were able to even the score at the 87th minute mark with a goal from Maria Pareja to force the game to extra time. GW had five scoring chances in the overtime periods but could not find the back of the net to finish the day with the 2-2 draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 10th Minute – The Tigers were first to strike, with Lexi Littlefield scoring her second goal of the season. Littlefield took a pass from Nikki Logan and headed the ball just beyond the reach of keeper Tamaki Machi. TU 1, GW 0
• 30TH Minute – The GW front line continued to fire off shots and was able to find the back of the net in the 30th minute. Rachel Sorkenn passed the ball across the goal line to Kelly Amador, who tipped it in to even the score. GW 1, TU 1
• 76th Minute – Towson pulled ahead with a goal from Sydney Davis. TU 2, GW 1
• 87th Minute – With three minutes left on the clock, the Colonials continued to press on attack and tied it up with a goal from Pareja. Sorkenn found Pareja in a pocket, where she was able to tip the ball just out of the reach of the Tigers' keeper. GW 2, TU 2
NOTEWORTHY
• First-years Isabella Buck and Tori Minda made their first career appearances in the Buff and Blue against Towson.
• The Colonials outshot the Tigers 12-2 in the first half and went on to hold a 30-7 advantage on the day.
• GW dominated the game's second overtime period and had four scoring chances while holding Towson to none.
• GW's best chance came at the 103rd minute. Sammy Neyman took a free kick following a Towson foul and found Amador, who hit the post.
• Pavon paced the squad with seven shots while Amador followed closely behind with five. Sorkenn and Natalie Silberman also tallied a season-high four shots each to add to GW's scoring effort.
• Sorkenn leads the team with her five assists.
UP NEXT: The Colonials are set to wrap up their four-game home stand on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they welcome Bucknell to the GW Soccer Field.
