Colonials to host four games on the Vern
WASHINGTON -Â George Washington softball is set to host four games, including a doubleheader vs. Virginia, on the Mount Vernon Campus this fall in preparation for the 2020 season, head coach Shane Winkler announced Monday.
The defending A-10 co-champion Colonials will also tackle a pair of road doubleheaders as part of an eight-game exhibition schedule.
GW kicks off the fall festivities on Colonials Weekend by hosting an Alumni Game on Sept. 21 at noon. (Alumni can register to participate by contacting Winkler at Winkler@gwu.edu.) The Colonials are in action for the first time the next day hosting Georgetown at noon.
The Buff and Blue continue the slate with doubleheaders at Mount St. Mary's (Sept. 29, noon) and Howard (Oct. 4, 5:30 p.m.) before welcoming the Hoyas to the Vern again Oct. 11 for a single game at 3 p.m.
GW wraps the fall Oct. 26 with a home twin bill against ACC foe Virginia, starting at 1 p.m.
"We're excited to be back on campus and preparing for our fall season," Winkler said. "We have a majority of our roster back this year, and a group of newcomers ready to make an impact. This group has championship aspirations, and it begins with playing a challenging fall schedule that will help prepare us for this spring."
The Colonials will look to build on their record-setting 2019 season with a majority of their lineup returning from the squad that won a program-record 44 games on the way to a share of the A-10 title and a berth in the National Invitational Softball Championship Liberty Regional.
Four All-Conference honorees, including A-10 Player of the Year Jenna Cone and First-Team Pitcher Sierra Lange, are back to lead the way for the Buff and Blue, who have also added five first-years to the mix.
GW will open the 2020 season in Mexico at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The rest of the spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
