Colonials set to host 10 contests on the Vern
2019 Schedule
WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team will host 10 opponents and face nine more on the road during a 19-match schedule this fall, second-year head coach Michelle Demko announced on Tuesday.
The Colonials look to contend for the conference crown after reaching the Atlantic 10 Championship for the sixth consecutive season with the help of a strong schedule that features a 2018 top-25 squad and a slew of local opponents.
"This year's schedule is very exciting to announce," said Demko. "Looking at our opponents from top to bottom, we will be battle-tested from opening weekend with William & Mary through our last game against Saint Louis, who are last year's A-10 champions. The goal of our non-conference schedule is to put ourselves against opponents that challenge us to compete at a high level for 90 minutes. These types of higher level environments allow us to see a faster speed of play, so we can test our overall organization along with transitional attacking and defending. It also organically creates an atmosphere where our focus needs to be that of a championship mentality for the duration of 90 minutes."
GW will kick off its 2019 campaign with back-to-back bouts on the road, first opening its season at William & Mary on Aug. 22 before making the short trip to American University to face the Eagles on Aug. 28.
The Colonials will then open play in September with a five-game homestand, starting off with a Sept. 1 match against NC State, which finished last season No. 18 nationally in the NCAA RPI rankings. GW will then host Liberty (Sept. 5) before welcoming local rivals Maryland (Sept. 8) and Towson (Sept. 12) to the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Buff and Blue will wrap up their season-long home stretch with a bout against Bucknell on Sept. 15.
GW will face UMBC on the road on Sept. 19 and will face its final non-conference opponent on Oct. 10 at Delaware State.
"As a program we need to see what our response is when the game is tight, so we understand where we need to be sharper and where we can expose teams with our strengths," said Demko. "It's also a great opportunity for our soccer community to come watch quality soccer right here in D.C. They can come watch us compete against NC State, Maryland, Liberty, Bucknell, and Towson in our home non-conference match ups. All of those teams mentioned will help prepare us for the rigor of A-10 conference play. I anticipate each conference game to be a physical battle with end-to-end soccer."
The Colonials kick off Atlantic 10 Conference play with a trip to Philadelphia to face La Salle on Sept. 22 before returning home to host Fordham on Sept. 26.
The Buff and Blue will also host Massachusetts (Oct. 3), Saint Joseph's (Oct. 17), St. Bonaventure (Oct. 20) and Saint Louis (Oct. 27), and will travel to Rhode Island (Sept. 29), Richmond (Oct. 6), VCU (Oct. 13) and George Mason (Oct. 24).
Postseason play for the A-10 kicks off on Nov. 2 with quarterfinal matchups at home sites. The conference semifinals and finals will be played in Saint Louis on Nov. 8 and 10.
"There are so many talented teams in the A-10," said Demko. "I believe our early-game preparations in August and September will help us have the stamina needed to be successful down the stretch in October and November."
