Slugger selected by Boston in the 22nd round on Wednesday
WASHINGTON -Â GW baseball first baseman Dom D'Alessandro was rewarded for his tremendous senior campaign on Wednesday, being selected by the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft.Â
Chosen with the final pick of the round, 677th overall, D'Alessandro joined Nate Fassnacht (8th round, Phillies) as GW's two selections in the annual draft. The Colonials have had multiple selections in three straight drafts for the first time in program history with at least one pick in five straight drafts, the longest stretch in school history.
One of the best hitters in the nation, D'Alessandro finished second in the NCAA with a .423 batting average, the highest in the Atlantic 10 since 2013 and 32 points higher than the second-highest mark in the league this year. The Glassboro, N.J., native led the A-10 in hits, home runs, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and hits per game. He narrowly missed the league's triple crown, falling four RBI shy of the league leader, Fassnacht.
The Buff & Blue have seen a rapid increase in players selected in the MLB Draft with nine draftees in the last five years, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the 23 all-time selections in program history.
D'Alessandro is the first Colonial to be selected by Boston since John Flaherty in the 25th round in 1988. Flaherty is GW's most successful MLB alum, appearing in over 1,000 games in his career from 1992-2005 with Boston, Detroit, San Diego, Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees.
