GW ace to represent Philippines at international tournament
WASHINGTON - Coming off an outstanding sophomore season, GW's Sierra Lange is set to represent the Philippines at the USA Softball International Cup, which begins Monday in Columbus, Ga.
It's the fourth straight summer that Lange will take the diamond for the Philippines in international play. The Asian nation will play at least nine games over seven days in the tournament, starting with a doubleheader vs. China (1:30 p.m.) and the host United States (4:30 p.m.). (Full schedule/Watch)
The event will serve as a tune-up for Lange's squad ahead of the Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which runs Sept. 24-29 in Shanghai, China, with the winner earning a spot in the field for the 2020 Tokyo Games.
"I am super excited to be representing the Philippines again this summer," said Lange, a Texas native who has Filipino heritage on her mother's side. "It's always an awesome experience to see different cultures coming together to play a sport that we all love.
"I can't wait to play with the girls again. We have worked really hard, and I'm happy that we get another chance to qualify for the Olympics in September!"
Lange heads to the International Cup after a historic spring in which she helped GW earn a share of its first Atlantic 10 title and first postseason appearance. She shined in all aspects for the Colonials, finishing among the national leaders in wins (31), strikeouts (246), batting average (.411), hits (85) and triples (6) en route to First Team All A-10 and NFCA All-Region honors.
Lange fueled the Buff and Blue's memorable run at the A-10 Championship by pitching all 28 innings to earn a spot on the All-Championship Team, and she was also recognized on the All-Liberty Regional Team for her play at the National Invitational Softball Championship.
Last summer, Lange made seven appearances in the circle for the Philippines at the Women's Softball World Championship in Chiba, Japan, compiling a 2-0 record with a 1.68 ERA over 16 2/3 innings. She's also competed internationally at the World Cup of Softball, Canada Cup and Junior World Championship.
