A Letter to My Younger Self
5/10/2019 10:00:00 AM | Men's Golf, My GW: Celebrating our Stories
By Logan Lowe
Dear 11-year-old Logan,
Â
You're incredibly shy, serious and hot-headed.
Â
You are shaking your head, frustrated that you don't hit every shot perfect.Â
Â
At this point your goals are far-fetched dreams that are just beginning to form. You're discounting everything that I'm saying, believing that you already know better. You are beating balls in the hot summer sun, not even paying attention to where they end up.Â
Â
You don't realize that one day a man you just met at golf camp will be your Division I golf coach. You two will keep in touch for years, before one day you sign your National Letter-of-Intent to The George Washington University.
Â
Be thankful for the support of your family, who love you no matter what score you shoot. Be grateful for the sacrifices of your parents, who work tirelessly to give you the opportunities to grow as a student, an athlete, and a person. Love them for recognizing and cultivating your talent, even when you think you may not have what it takes.
Â
Throughout high school, your golf game will be characterized by a series of close calls. You will put yourself in countless positions to leave your mark, but you can't seem to seal the deal. After high school graduation you will get a glimpse of the success you have been chasing at The U.S. Junior Amateur, rocking a GW polo in the Round of 16.
Â
Congratulations on finally realizing your dream of being a collegiate athlete.Â
Â
Your first tournament you will tie a school record, but little do you know that your early success is only a precursor for the journey ahead. The rest of your first semester will be a struggle, where you ultimately question your abilities.
Â
Don't give up.
Â
Remember that you are a part of something much bigger than yourself. Draw inspiration from your coaches, your teammates, and your University. You will always feel a sense of pride being a Colonial, smiling to yourself on the first tee whenever you hear "Now on the tee from George Washington University, Logan Lowe." You begin to reflect on those who have come before you and the support they continue to offer. You haven't come this far to give up on yourself, and more importantly on those who support you.
Â
You will slowly learn to love the moment, control your desires, and embrace who you are: a meticulous thinker. Honesty and discipline become your best friends, as you keep mental notes on what doesn't work, until you ultimately create your own process.
Â
You finally learn how to win in 2017.
Â
Three more collegiate victories and A-10 First Team All-Conference honors later, you arrive at your final conference championship. Full of hope and desire at this event, you will once again hoist a trophy and recognize the pride you feel knowing that you represent those who have paved the way for you and those who will follow in your footsteps.
Â
You still think you know it all, but you are going to learn soon enough. Pay attention.Â
Â
But one day, at the end of your storied collegiate career, you will truly know what it means to be a part of something that is bigger than yourself; to be a Colonial.
