Rubber game set for noon on Sunday
RICHMOND, Va. -Â GW baseball saw its pivotal three-game Atlantic 10 series evened at a game apiece on Saturday afternoon, as Richmond scored multiple runs in the first three innings en route to an 11-4 victory over the Colonials at Pitt Field.
Similar to Friday, the Buff & Blue grabbed the lead three batters into the game with junior Nate Fassnacht singling home first-year Cade Fergus for a 1-0 advantage. A double play truncated the threat and swung the momentum to Spiders, who scored four times and knocked out first-year starter Rich Pfluger in the first inning.
Richmond added three runs in the second and three more in the third to assume a commanding 10-1 lead.Â
The Colonials' offense was held in check until an RBI double from redshirt freshman Derek Ripp in the sixth inning. An inning later, Fassnacht drove home his second run of the day with an RBI double, and senior Dom D'Alessandro followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-4.
Despite the final margin, GW out-hit UR on the day, 10-9, led by junior Steve Barmakian's 3-for-5 day at the plate. Five of the 10 hits were doubles from five different players.
The Colonials used seven hurlers on the day with junior Cal Stalzer authoring two scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Redshirt senior Brady Renner and first-year Blake Ripp also tossed a scoreless inning each.
The critical rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at noon. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
