GW slugger recognized by Softball America
WASHINGTON - George Washington softball's Jenna Cone made more history Wednesday, becoming the first Colonial to be named an All-American.
Cone earned a spot on Softball America's inaugural national list, garnering third-team honors following a tremendous junior season. The California native piled up 20 home runs and 67 RBIs to help the Buff and Blue win a program-record 44 games and earn a share of their first Atlantic 10 title.
It's the latest honor for Cone, who this spring became the first in program history to be named A-10 Player of the Year. She was also recognized on the All-ECAC First Team and NFCA All Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team.
"This was a historic season for our program, and Jenna played a major part in our success," GW head coach Shane Winkler said. "She continues to re-write the GW offensive record book and deserves to be recognized as one of the best players in the country."
Cone earned all those accolades by posting a .381/.490/.783 slash line to lead GW's nationally-ranked offense. She paced the A-10 and ranked among the top 60 nationally in homers, RBIs, total bases (148), on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Cone's 20 long balls tied a conference record and ranked 11th nationally, while her 67 RBIs topped her own program mark and placed her eighth in the country. She became the program's all-time leader in both categories during a memorable season.
Cone delivered on GW's spirited run at the conference tournament, claiming a spot on the All-Championship Team thanks to a team-high .588 on-base percentage over four games. After sharing the conference crown with Fordham, the Colonials wrapped their season earlier this month with their first postseason appearance, competing in the National Invitational Softball Championship.
