The Colonials took fourth place, topping their previous best of 10th
NEWPORT, R.I. – The GW sailing team closed its season with a bang on Friday at the ICSA Women's National Championship, recording its best-ever finish at the event with a fourth-place showing.
The Colonials, who were competing in the national finals for the fifth consecutive season, topped their previous best of 10th in 2016 by utilizing their depth over the four-day regatta. Seven sailors contributed to GW's fifth-place finish in the semifinals on Tuesday and Wednesday, and GW stuck with a similar script to achieve their fourth-place result in the finals.
In Division A, Riley Legault skippered all 16 races while Alexandra Fayer (races 1-8), Sarah Noyes (9-12, 15-16) and Marie Line (13-14) split crewing duties en route to a seventh-place finish. The Colonials took fourth in Division B behind the skippering of Aitana Mendiguren with crews Noyes (1-8) and Emma Mendenhall (9-16).
That added up to a fourth-place showing overall with 231 points, behind only a trio of college sailing powerhouses in Brown (184), Harvard (199) and Yale (214).
After the meet, Legault was honored as an honorable mention All-American to close out her decorated career. The Florida native won the MAISA Singlehanded Championship in the fall and was a two-time all-conference skipper.
"This was one of the most complete and selfless women's teams I've ever seen," said head coach Billy Martin. "It's a credit to them for working really hard, trusting the process and getting better every day. They came in prepared for this. It took every person to get to this point and I couldn't be prouder of how the entire team supported this effort."
