The Colonials have advanced to the women’s national finals for the fifth straight year
NEWPORT, R.I. – For the fifth consecutive year the GW sailing team has advanced to the finals of the ICSA Women's National Championship by virtue of a fifth-place showing in the two-day semifinals, which concluded Wednesday.
Â
The 12th-ranked Colonials are now among the final 18 teams competing for the national championship, which will be determined on Thursday and Friday.
Â
In the semifinals GW put together a strong showing, totaling 166 points to comfortably sit among the top nine in the Eastern Division which moved on to the finals. Host Brown (99) finished first, followed by Boston College (106), while Georgetown (162) and Harvard (163) narrowly edged out the Colonials.
Â
Riley Legault skippered GW to a fourth-place showing in Division A as Sarah Noyes and Alexandra Fayer split time as crew. In Division B, four Colonials contributed to the cause with Aitana Mendiguren skippering throughout with crews Noyes, Emma Mendenhall and Marie Line. Â
Â
"I'm really proud of how everyone sailed and things are really coming together for the finals," said head coach Billy Martin. "We were able to work on some different crew combinations to see what we might do in finals, and we learned a lot about the venue. The team continues to be extremely selfless and relentless in their pursuit to get better. The goal is to go out and put up a great result at finals and show everyone we're one of the best teams in the country."
