After Sunday rain out, Colonials share conference crown with Fordham
AMHERST, Mass. - George Washington softball was named Atlantic 10 co-champion Sunday, sharing the crown with Fordham after the winner-take-all final game of the tournament was washed out by rain.
The Colonials took the next step in an already historic season by securing their first-ever A-10 crown after going 3-1 over four games this week at Sortino Field.
As the A-10 regular season champion, Fordham claims the conference's automatic NCAA bid and advances to the national tournament for the seventh straight season.
At 42-16, GW has accepted an invite to continue its season in the National Invitational Softball Championship, which will release its field and schedule on Sunday night after the NCAA Selection Show.
"I'm proud of the fight our girls put up all week during the tournament," head coach Shane Winkler said. "We would have loved to decide a champion on the field, but our girls have worked tremendously hard and are deserving of being A-10 champions. I'm excited to have the opportunity to make the program's first postseason appearance and compete for an NISCÂ championship."
Sunday's cancellation closed an impressive week for the third-seeded Colonials. They won three straight one-run games, including a 2-1 extra-inning victory over host UMass and a 12-11 walk-off defeat of Saint Joseph's, to reach their first conference final since 2012.
Rain on Friday forced changes in the tournament schedule and pushed the winner-take-all game to Sunday. A rematch between Fordham and GW became necessary with the Rams' 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The A-10 opted to declare co-champions, giving the Colonials their first title in the program's 17th season.
The banner marks a massive breakthrough for a group on the rise. After snapping the program record for wins in back-to-back seasons, the Colonials have been even better in their first spring under Winkler, smashing the mark again with 42 victories and counting behind Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Jenna Cone and All-Conference First Team pick Sierra Lange.
Lange led GW this week, handling all 28 innings in the circle and earning three victories to push her season total to 29. The sophomore from Texas also delivered the walk-off single that finished the win over Saint Joseph's.
Cone compiled a .588 on-base percentage over the four games thanks to four hits, four walks and a pair of HBPs. The junior slugger provided the game-changing hit in the opening victory over Saint Louis with a three-run home run.
Both Colonials were selected to the All-Championship Team, along with sophomore Alessandra Ponce, who hit .500 (7-for-14) with a pair of RBIs.
Sidney Bloomfield (.417) and Jessica Linquist (.364) also had strong offensive showings to power the Buff and Blue in a memorable week at UMass.
