Kobersteen earns first collegiate win on the hill
ARLINGTON, Va. -Â GW baseball capped off its home non-conference slate with a dominant win on Wednesday at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, dispatching Coppin State, 12-2.
First-year Alex Kobersteen led the way on the bump for GW, earning his first win with a career-long 5.0 innings. Kobersteen allowed just a run on four hits and struck out one while receiving plenty of support from the offense.
The Colonials jumped out quickly in the first, scoring twice without the aid of a hit thanks to a two-out dropped pop-up that scored first-year Cade Fergus. Three straight walks after the miscue forced in a run to make it 2-0.
In the third, senior Dom D'Alessandro cranked an RBI double to left-center and later scored, along with sophomore Tyler Hix, on a three-run home run from first-year Noah Levin that doubled the Colonials' advantage to 6-0.
Coppin scored a run in the top of the fifth, but GW responded with four runs in the home half with RBIs coming from Fergus, junior Steve Barmakian and junior Nate Fassnacht via a sacrifice fly and two singles, respectively.
D'Alessandro added on two more runs for good measure in the seventh with a two-RBI single, bringing his final line on the day to 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Fassnacht and redshirt freshman Derek Ripp collected a pair of hits with Ripp extending his hitting streak to 15 games in the process. Barmakian posted a three-hit day, with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
GW steps back into conference play this weekend, visiting Richmond for a three-game series that starts Friday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
