Colonials improve to 3-3 in conference play
WASHINGTON – Coming off a loss at Saint Joseph's on Friday evening, the George Washington lacrosse team returned home on Sunday afternoon and bounced back in dominant fashion with an 18-8 victory over the visiting VCU Rams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonials came out hot from the start, striking six straight times to establish a 6-0 lead through the first 11 minutes of the contest. Aidan Cage scored twice, while Christine Weber, Katie Quinn, Alana Greene and Morgan McDonnell added one each in GW's game-opening scoring spree. The Rams were finally able to break through the Buff and Blue defense at the 18:24 mark with their first tally of the day before the Colonials answered back with another pair from Cage and Ioanna Mantzouratos. VCU found the back of the net two more times, while the Colonials scored three more, to go into the break with an 11-3 advantage.
VCU attempted a comeback in the second half, scoring five goals while holding the Colonials to two within the first 20 minutes after the break. The Rams' comeback, however, was halted as GW fired off five consecutive goals to cement their 18-8 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
• Cage paced the squad with a career-high four goals, while the duo of McDonnell and Mantouratos added a hat trick each. Greene, Tori Hampton, and Quinn also had a multi-goal game with a pair each. Weber and Kali Benvenuto added one apiece.
• Quinn matched Cage with a game-high five points (2g, 3a).
• Nine Colonials finished the day with an assist.
• Caroline Esmond led the team with a game-high five ground balls while captain Caroline Kiernan and Cassie Scandalios added four each. Esmond also caused a team-high three turnovers.
• The Colonials were dominant statistically: winning draw controls (18-10), ground balls (18-12), shots (34-26), and caused turnovers (12-10).
• Sophomore keeper Jenna Oler logged 58 minutes between the pipes and made nine saves, while Alexa Solomon played the game's final minutes for the Buff and Blue.
UP NEXT
The Colonials will wrap up their home slate with a bout against Duquesne on Friday, April 12 at 2 p.m. before making the short trip to Fairfax, Va., to face George Mason on Sunday, April 14 at 1 p.m.
