Colonials fall, 15-10, in back-and-forth offensive battle
FAIRFAX, Va. – In its penultimate game of the regular season, the George Washington lacrosse team fell to George Mason, 15-10, on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonials came out hot with back-to-back strikes from Christine Weber and Tori Hampton to give GW the early 2-0 advantage. The Patriots responded with a pair of their own to tie the game at two before Katie Quinn was able to convert from the free position to put GW back on top. George Mason continued to fight back with a goal from Deanna Balsama, but the Buff and Blue answered with another goal from Hampton, her 26th of the season. The Patriots struck back once again just 34 seconds later to tie it at four before McDonnell took a feed from Catie Perkins to give GW the 5-4 edge with 7:38 in the first half. The Patriots, however, were able to get past the Buff and Blue defense to tie it at five at the break.
The Patriots began to pull away in the second half, scoring five straight goals to establish a lead that it would never relinquish. McDonnell was able to halt George Mason's scoring spree with a strike at the 12:36 mark, but the Patriots scored again to push their advantage back to five. The two squads traded goals once more before the Colonials attempted a comeback with a trio of tallies from Hampton, Alana Greene, and Katie Quinn. Those goals, however, would be the last of the day for GW as the Patriots closed the game with three goals of their own to cement their 15-10 victory.
