Fassnacht registers three hits in 10-4 setback
AMHERST, Mass. - For the second straight day, GW baseball fell victim to a big inning from the UMass offense, falling 10-4 on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The Colonials will look to salvage the series finale on Sunday at noon.
Despite a three-run first inning from UMass, GW battled back to make it a one-run game in the second via an RBI single from first-year Logan Doran and a sacrifice fly from junior Greg Anderberg. The Minutemen, though, doubled the lead in the fourth and blew things wide open with a five-run fifth accented by a three-run homer.
UMass added its 10th run of the day in the sixth that was quickly countered in the seventh inning with a two-run single from junior Nate Fassnacht. The hit was part of a big day for Fassnacht, as he finished 3-for-5 with a double and the two batted in.
However, the rest of the Colonials were held to just five hits combined as the UMass pitching staff held the robust Buff & Blue offense in check for the second straight day.
Senior Brady Renner suffered the loss for GW, allowing four runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work. Junior Cal Stalzer and sophomore Trevor Kuncl minimized the damage by allowing just one run in the final 3.1 innings of work.
