Colonials defeated Canisius and UMBC on Friday
WASHINGTON - George Washington softball kicked off its Colonial Classic in style Friday, earning a doubleheader sweep in soggy conditions on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials rallied from an eight-run hole to defeat Canisius, 10-8, to open the day, completing the comeback on the strength of Jenna Cone's go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth.
Later, they knocked off UMBC, 11-3, in five innings, plating the final seven runs for a run-rule win. Sierra Lange earned her 11th victory in the circle and also went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.
GW improved to 15-3, including 8-0 on its home field. The Colonials got there by swatting nine extra-base hits in Friday's doubleheader.Â
Cone accounted for two of them with a double and the homer, finishing the day 4-for-6 with six RBIs and five runs scored. Lange and Jessica Linquist posted two extra-baggers apiece, as well.
GW 10, Canisius 8:Â Faced with an early 8-0 deficit, the Colonials stormed back to claim the victory.
GW started the comeback with a three-run fifth, taking advantage of three Canisius errors. Marta Fuentes stoked the rally with a leadoff double.
The Colonials tied it by batting around to score five more in the fourth. Lange, Elena Shelepak and Alessandra Ponce provided run-scoring singles before Priscilla Martinez tied it with a sacrifice fly.Â
An inning later, GW jumped in front. Linquist's two-out double extended the inning for Cone, who smashed a pitch the other way over the right field fence for her third home run of the season.
Lange took it from there, earning her second save of the season. The sophomore entered the game with a runner on third and one out in the sixth. She promptly retired the next two batters via strikeout and then followed with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Faith Weber picked up her first victory of the season with three shutout innings of relief.
GW's eight hits came from eight different batters. Cone drove in three runs and scored twice, while Linquist reached all four times with the double and three walks and scored three times.
GW 11, UMBC 3 (5 innings):Â The Colonials broke open a tight game with a late offensive flurry to complete the sweep.
GW carried over the momentum from the comeback in the opener with three straight extra-base hits to open game two. The Colonials jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a triple from Linquist followed by doubles from Cone and Lange.
UMBC pulled within 4-3 in the fourth and was threatening for more when Lange flagged down a grounder and raced to tag a Retriever caught between third and home. She'd escape the jam by getting the next batter to pop out.
That turned out to be as close as the Retrievers would get. The Buff and Blue answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, boosted by more production from the top of the order. Linquist drove in the first run with a sac fly before Cone and Lange followed with run-scoring hits.
GW earned the run-rule victory with a four-spot in the fifth. Riley Tejcek, Cone and Lange recorded RBI singles before Shelepak's rip down the left field line brought home Cone to finish it.
Lange tossed her eighth complete game of the season to improve to 11-2. She struck out eight Retrievers over five solid innings.
With her four hits, Lange boosted her A-10 best batting average to .517.
Cone's second three-RBI effort of the day boosted her team-leading total to 19.
