Colonials scheduled for five home games over three days
The Buff and Blue are scheduled to play five games over three days, starting with a doubleheader on Friday. They're set to face Canisius and Manhattan twice and UMBC once in the event.
The full weekend schedule is available on the Tournament Central page. Check back to GWsports.com and follow @GW_Softball on Twitter for up-to-date information on potential schedule changes.Â
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW completed a midweek sweep of Howard at the Vern on Tuesday, improving to 13-3 on the season. The Colonials had to rally for an 11-9 win in a slugfest to start the day before collecting a 9-1 victory in five innings in game two.
Down a run in the bottom of the sixth, Marta Fuentes came through with a two-out, two-run single to put GW in front for good. The senior shortstop finished the day 4-for-7 with four runs scored and five steals to spark the Buff and Blue.
Jessica Linquist tallied a team-high five RBIs in the doubleheader, including a three-run double in the fourth inning of the second game.
Jayme Cone shined in the circle, making the most of her first start of the season to pick up the victory in the second game. Back following elbow surgery, the senior hurler allowed a run on six hits in her first complete game since 2016.
READY TO RUN:Â GW stole 10 bases in the two games vs. Howard to take over the A-10 lead in that category. Through 16 games, the Colonials have swiped 27 bases while being caught just five times.
After setting a program record with 32 stolen bases in 2018, Fuentes again leads the Colonials with her 11 steals. Lange, Sidney Bloomfield and Criza Bulanadi are next with four SBs apiece.
SIERRA'S STUNNING STATS:Â Sierra Lange currently leads the A-10 in every major pitching category, including wins (10), ERA (1.51), strikeouts (67), innings pitched (65) and complete games (7). Her win total ranks tied for fifth nationally.
Lange is also the A-10's leading hitter at .500 with 26 hits in 52 at-bats. She ranks second in the conference in doubles (6) and runs scored (13), only trailing her teammate Linquist in both categories.
SCOUTING CANISIUS:Â The Golden Griffins enter the weekend in search of their first win after opening the season last month with six losses at the Hawaii Invitational.
GW and Canisius have split four previous meetings with the Colonials taking the most recent matchup, 4-3, in March 2016.
SCOUTING UMBC:Â The Retrievers are 3-5 after winning two of five games last weekend at UNC Wilmington's Seahawk Softball Classic. Courtney Coppersmith has been a standout in the circle with a 2-2 record and 1.26 ERA in seven appearances.
The all-time series is deadlocked, 7-7, with the most recent meeting coming in 2015.
SCOUTING MANHATTAN:Â The Jaspers kicked off their season last month by going 2-3 at the Madeira Beach Invitational in Florida. They're hitting .319 as a team through the five games, led by Adriana Gambino (.529).
GW won a pair of games against Manhattan in 2014 but trails the all-time series, 4-3.
SCOUTING CORNELL:Â The Big Red also started the season at the Madeira Beach Invitational, going winless in five games at the tournament.
ON DECK:Â GW has added a midweek trip to Towson for a doubleheader next Wednesday. The Colonials will be back on the Vern next weekend to host Georgetown, Oakland and Stony Brook for the Buff and Blue Challenge.
