Colonials stayed perfect at home with win over Manhattan

WASHINGTON - Jenna Cone clubbed two home runs and a double Saturday, highlighting GW softball's 10-1 win over Manhattan in five innings.

The Colonials stayed perfect on their home field on the Mount Vernon Campus and improved to 16-3 overall with the run-rule victory on the second day of the Colonial Classic.

Cone launched a two-run homer in the first, doubled and scored in the second and then added a solo shot in the fourth. The junior from California has five extra-base hits in three games this weekend, including three long balls.

With five homers on the season, Cone now has 35 for her career, one shy of Victoria Valos' program record.

Cone's first-inning round-tripper set the tone for GW to get off to a flying start against the Jaspers.

The Colonials batted around in the opening frame, rolling up five runs on six hits. After Cone's homer, Morgan Kummer's bases-loaded single plated two more runs before Alessandra Ponce raced home on a two-out wild pitch to make it 5-0.

An inning later, Sierra Lange followed Cone's double with an RBI triple before scoring on Elena Shelepak's ground out.

After Cone's second homer made it 8-0 in the fourth, the Colonials added two more runs thanks to back-to-back-to-back two-out doubles from Mia Parker, Olivia Ortlieb and Priscilla Martinez.

Lange was the beneficiary of that offensive explosion, cruising to her 12th win of the season. The sophomore hurler carried a shutout into the fifth inning before settling for her ninth complete game in 11 starts.

Lange's 2-for-3 effort at the plate upped her A-10 leading batting average to .524 (33-for-63), as well.

Sidney Bloomfield was the other Colonial to record a pair of hits in the victory.
