The Colonials fell to the Rams, 67-56, on Wednesday night in New York
BRONX, N.Y. -- In its final road game of the regular season, the GW men's basketball team made its annual trip to the Bronx to meet Fordham, seeking to extend its winning streak against the Rams to 10 in a row.
Despite career-best performances from Javier Langarica (15 rebounds) and Justin Williams (11 points), the Buff and Blue couldn't overcome a sloppy first half and ultimately fell, 67-56, in the penultimate game before the A-10 Championship back in NYC next week.
The shorthanded Colonials lost Terry Nolan Jr. to a heel injury after he logged just five minutes, and couldn't find enough scoring punch from the rest of the squad. Maceo Jack had a rare off night of late and mustered five points, while the Colonials were led in scoring by Justin Mazzulla's 12. Williams' 11 marked GW's other double-digit scorer, as DJ Williams also struggled from the floor.
After Fordham built a 43-28 lead at intermission, GW put up a fight in the second half as it came out of the locker room on a 14-0 run. Justin Williams made it a 46-45 deficit when he hit a 3-pointer with 12:20 remaining, and the Colonials had several opportunities to tie or take the lead over the next six minutes. Ultimately though, Fordham staved off the comeback attempt and eventually padded its lead back to double digits.
Five Rams scored in double figures, led by Jalen Cobb's 15. While both squads hit 21 field goals, Fordham's ability to bang twice as many threes (10) as GW (5) was a factor, as was the Rams' ball protection that only coughed it up four times. While GW was also relatively sure with just nine turnovers on the night, Fordham's 9-3 edge in points-off-turnovers accounted for the rest of the difference.
Following Wednesday's games and heading into the conference's final game of the regular season, GW is in a 12th place tie with UMass in the conference, a game ahead of 14th place Fordham. The 12 and 13 seeds will meet at Barclays Center at 1 p.m. next Wednesday, with the 11 vs. 14 game following at 3:30.
GW finishes the slate at home with George Mason on Saturday at 2 p.m., while UMass travels to Rhode Island at 4 p.m. Fordham visits La Salle also at 4 p.m.
