The Colonials were dropped by George Mason, 81-65, on Saturday afternoon
WASHINGTON -- In the final game of the regular season, GW men's basketball hosted George Mason for a Saturday matinee at the Charles E. Smith Center. Hoping for some momentum heading into Wednesday's opener at A-10 Championship at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Buff and Blue came up short as the Patriots took an 81-65 win.
After Mason got walloped by league-leading VCU in its last game, GW knew that the Patriots were going to come out angry just a short ways away from their Fairfax, Va., campus. Knowing that the other George would play with something to prove was one thing; stopping them was a bigger challenge. The visitors felt right at home and shot efficiently from all three levels in the contest. With a .536 field goal percentage, .500 clip from long range and .833 day at the line, Mason led wire-to-wire.
GW junior Justin Williams was a bright spot for the Colonials, coming off the bench to score a career-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. The swingman brought energy to the floor and chipped in three steals as well, but it wasn't enough to stem the Patriots' surge. Armel Potter chipped in 14 points and Maceo Jack had a baker's dozen, while Javier Langarica was a point and rebound shy of a double-double.
Four Patriots finished in double figures led by Jordan Miller's 17 points (6-of-6 FG), while Justin Kier had 13 points and nine assists.
GW was able to out-score its opposition in the paint, 42-32, and kept even after intermission at 39-39 after falling behind by as many as 22. The Colonials trailed 42-26 at the half.
GW now sets its sights on Brooklyn for the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Colonials will face UMass in the first round on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. ET in Barclays Center.
