No. 36 Gymnastics Concludes Regular Season on Sunday

Colonials to wrap regular season slate against trio of EAGL teams

LEADING OFF: The George Washington gymnastics team will wrap up its regular season on Sunday when it visits Towson to face Maryland along with East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foes Pittsburgh and New Hampshire for a 2 p.m. meet.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials posted a season-high 48.975 on vault and earned their third score above 49.000 on floor with a 49.050 to finish second in quad-meet action at NC State on Saturday. On their senior night, the host No. 27 Wolfpack tallied 196.100 to top the field, while No. 28 Arizona finished third with 195.050 and No. 56 Texas Woman's finished fourth with 193.500. Four gymnasts finished the day with new career highs, while four Colonials made podium appearances in Reynolds Coliseum.
VICTORY ON VAULT: The Buff and Blue closed their afternoon at NC State on a high note on vault, posting a season-high 48.975 to take first place. A pair of Colonials surpassed their career highs with Cydney Crasa earning a 9.850 and Chloe Vitoff scoring a 9.775. Alex Zois also earned a 9.850 to lead the squad with Crasa and finish in a tie for third on the podium, while Anna Warhol added a 9.800. Olivia Zona and Julia McLaughlin contributed matching 9.700s to add to GW's season-high score.
LEADING THE PACK: Zois has proven to be the most consistent performer on the Colonials' squad and has earned a score higher than a 9.700 on all but four routines this season. The fifth-year co-captain boasts season highs of 9.875 on vault, also a career high, a 9.875 on bars, a 9.875 on beam, a career-high matching 9.900 on floor, and a personal-best 39.425 in the all-around. As the lone gymnast competing in the all-around this season, Zois has posted an overall score above the 39.000 threshold nine times in 2019 and in each of the last eight meets. The Crofton, Md., product also ranks fifth on bars (9.810 NQS), third on beam (9.840 NQS), second on floor (9.865 NQS) and second in the all-around (39.265) in EAGL.
FLOORishing: GW had its best event of the day at NC State on floor, earning a 49.050. The 49.050 marks GW's third floor score above the 49.000 threshold this season. Zois led the way with a 9.850 with Simone Banen, who matched her season high. Olivia Raymond also had a season-high day, earning a 9.800, while Katya Karpova and Crasa wrapped up the floor lineup with identical 9.775s.
SOPHOMORES HITTING THEIR STRIDE: GW's sophomores, which make up seven of 18 gymnasts on the team, have lifted the Colonials' lineups so far in 2019. Of those seven sophomores, six have earned spots on the podium. Hannah Cohen, a fixture in the squad's bars and beam lineups, continues to put up solid scores for the Buff and Blue and posted her eighth straight score on beam above a 9.800 at NC State with a 9.850. The exercise science and nutrition major also matched her career high on bars at Maryland last week with a 9.775, her fifth score above a 9.700 on bars this season. For the second straight week, Cohen also ranks second in EAGL with her 9.845 NQS on beam, just .015 behind first-place Danielle Mulligan from New Hampshire.
In addition, every sophomore gymnast that has seen action so far in 2019 has either matched or surpassed their career highs, including Rachel Kaplan (9.850 FX), Katya Karpova (9.850 BB, 9.875 FX), Chloe Vitoff (9.775 V), and Anna Warhol (9.825 V, 9.825 UB).
STILL FIGHTING: Through 10 weeks of competition, the Colonials rank 36th nationally with an NQS of 195.250. With the top 36 squads advancing to the NCAA Regional Championships, GW remains in the fight for a spot at Regionals. According to RoadtoNationals.com, the Colonials are one of 15 teams battling for the final seven spots, with the teams ranked 30-36 in closest contention at just .320 apart.
EAGL UPDATE: GW currently ranks third in EAGL with its 195.250 NQS. NC State tops the league (195.715 NQS) followed by New Hampshire (195.570 NQS). Pittsburgh sits behind the Colonials in fourth with its 194.810 NQS, while North Carolina (194.615 NQS) and Towson (193.310 NQS) round out the league at fifth and sixth, respectively. GW also boasts ranks of second on bars (48.850 NQS), fourth on beam (48.755 NQS), and fourth on floor (48.970 NQS).
ROAD AHEAD: With the regular season coming to a close, the Colonials will head back to New Hampshire for EAGL Championships next Saturday, March 23.
