Men’s Basketball Sees Season End in A-10 Championship

The Colonials fell to George Mason, 61-57, in the second round
BROOKLYN -- After winning its opening game in the Atlantic 10 Championship for the sixth straight season yesterday, the George Washington men's basketball team was back on the floor less than 24 hours after Wednesday's finish, looking to take out George Mason in a revenge game against the local foe.
The 12th-seeded Colonials gave the 5-seed Patriots fits in the contest, and after a Javier Langarica bucket in the paint with 3:22 to play, the Buff and Blue were primed for the upset with a 54-52 lead.
It just wasn't to be for GW as the squad endured a 3:11 scoreless stretch, while All-Conference performers Otis Livingston Jr. and Justin Kier did their thing on the other end. Livingston hit a deep three to give Mason a one-point edge, then Kier sunk a jumper to stretch the Patriots' margin to three. Javon Greene put the game away at the line with a pair of free throws with :11 seconds to go as Mason moves on to the quarterfinals with a 61-57 victory.
GW's season ended despite yet another breakout performance Langarica. The Spanish big man was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while battling on both ends of the floor by swatting a game-high four shots on the other end. After fellow post presence Arnaldo Toro's season was cut short in November due to injury, Langarica was thrown into the fire after playing few minutes as a freshman.
Mason started the game 11-of-22 from the floor, but after a first half switch to a 1-3-1 zone, GW held the Patriots to 10-of-38 for the remainder. The Buff and Blue also won the turnover battle by protecting the rock with just six miscues, all the while forcing 11 turnovers. Armel Potter got his hands in for three steals, while leading GW with 12 points. Justin Mazzulla contributed 10 to the cause.
The game provided a valuable learning experience for the underclass Colonials, as they saw firsthand how the senior Livingston and junior Kier made the winning plays at winning time. Livingston finished with 12 points while Kier had a monster 26-point, 8-rebound, 5-assist ballgame.
GW will not lose anyone to graduation as it looks forward to the 2019-20 season.
