Weather forces doubleheader on Saturday
WASHINGTON - GW baseball wraps up its seven-game homestand with a weekend series against the Manhattan Jaspers. Inclement weather on Friday has forced a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. with the series wrapping up on Sunday at 12 p.m. Saturday's first game and Sunday's contest will be streamed live on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials fell in their first mid-week contest of the season, 14-4, against crosstown rival Georgetown on Wednesday. Starter Pat Knight pitched well, allowing just one earned run in four innings of work. Dom D'Alessandro picked up a pair of hits while four different Colonials recorded an RBI.
START ME UP: GW's two scheduled starters on Saturday, Nate Woods and Jaret Edwards, are coming off seven scoreless innings apiece last weekend against Saint Peter's. Woods has put up ridiculous numbers in his first two starts, allowing just one earned run on three hits in 13.1 innings with 14 strikeouts. He's holding opponents to a measly .070 average so far this year.
Edwards has been solid in the Saturday spot, limiting Tulane and Saint Peter's to a combined four runs on 11 hits in 12.0 frames with 12 strikeouts. Including Brady Renner's 10 punchouts, all three GW weekend starters have double-digit Ks and a K-to-BB ratio of at least 2.0.
TRANSFER OF POWER:Â The Colonials boast 15 new faces in the program this season, two of which have made an immediate impact at the plate. Sophomore transfer Tyler Hix had a game to remember in the opener last Friday against Saint Peter's, going 5-for-6 with three doubles, three runs scored and six RBIs, the most in a game for a Colonial since 2016. Hix picked up another RBI on Wednesday against Georgetown and continues to lead the A-10, and rank in a tie for 10th nationally, with 15 runs batted in.
Junior Greg Anderberg is another transfer hitting .300 or better, ranking second on the team in RBI (8) and tied for third in both hits (6) and runs (6).
ABOUT THE JASPERS: Manhattan is 2-4 to begin the campaign with wins at Stetson and Appalachian State. The Jaspers have won both of their Sunday games thanks to tremendous starting pitching from southpaw John Cain, who has yielded only one earned run in 13.2 innings with 16 strikeouts. Ryan Takacs and Marc Galvan, the team's Friday and Saturday starters, have been knocked around for a combined 26 earned runs in 15.2 innings of work (14.93 ERA).
Offensively, the Jaspers are hitting .217 as a team, led by Nick Cimillo's .360 average with nine hits and three RBI. Shawn Blake has accrued three doubles in six games, and is second on the squad with a .348 average.
