Meet Notes
LEADING OFF: After three straight meets on the road, the George Washington gymnastics team is set to make its return to the Charles E. Smith Center on Friday at 7 p.m. to host New Hampshire, Yale, and William & Mary.
Â
ROSE THEN SLAY: Prior to march-outs at 7 p.m., GW will host a wine tasting with light hors d'oeuvres inside the Colonials Club. The cost is $15 and includes the single-meet ticket along with an open bar with a selection of wines for fans of age.Â
Â
LAST TIME OUT: GW (2-5, 0-3 EAGL) posted season-high scores on vault and uneven bars, but was edged by New Hampshire, 195.500-194.475, on Sunday afternoon at Lindholm Gymnasium, the site of the 2019 East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championship. Five Colonials finished the day on the podium while five gymnasts either matched or surpassed their season highs.
Â
BUMP ON BARS: The Colonials had their best event on bars on Sunday, totaling a season-high score of 48.825. Senior co-captain Julia McLaughlin highlighted the bars lineup with a career-high 9.825 along with sophomore Anna Warhol, who also earned a 9.825 to surpass her personal-record. The team-high scores also put the pair of Colonials in a tie for second place. In addition, the 48.825 on bars marks a .200 increase from last week's score at West Virginia (1/27) and a .650 increase from the squad's score at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational (1/13).
Â
RISING TO THE OCCASION: As the lone Colonial competing in all-around action so far this season, fifth-year co-captain Alex Zois has made her mark and paces EAGL with her 38.984 average. Despite taking second in all-around at UNH, the Crofton, Maryland, native recorded a season-high matching 39.050 behind season-high scores on vault (9.750) and beam (9.875), along with a 9.675 on bars and 9.750 on floor. The 39.050 also marks the second time this season that Zois has scored above the 39.000 threshold and the 10th time she has done so in her career.
Â
HOME SWEET HOME: The Colonials have performed some of their best routines at home and boast a 42-2 record in the Smith Center dating back to the 2015 season. In 2018, GW went undefeated in its own house and tied its program record score of 196.875 on Senior Day (March 11).
Â
YOUNG GUNS: GW's underclassmen, which make up 12 of 18 gymnasts on the team, have lifted the Colonials' lineups so far in 2019. Of those underclassmen, six gymnasts have earned a spot on the podium (four first-years, two sophomores) for a combined eight podium appearances. In addition, every sophomore gymnast that has seen action so far in 2019 has either matched or surpassed their career highs, including Hannah Cohen (9.875 BB), Rachel Kaplan (9.775 FX), Katya Karpova (9.750 BB), Chloe Vitoff (9.750 V), and Anna Warhol (9.775 V, 9.825 UB).
Â
