DJ Williams led GW with 16 points
WASHINGTON -- Over the years the annual match-up between George Washington and VCU at the Charles E. Smith Center has been memorable for the Colonials faithful. The Buff and Blue overcame a heartbreaker in 2016-17 with a blowout triumph in 2017-18, to set the stage for this year's contest. Unfortunately for the home team, it was the Rams' turn on Wednesday night. In a competitive and tightly contested affair, VCU came away with a 60-50 win that was much closer than the final margin would indicate.
The game started promisingly enough for GW as the Colonials were the early aggressor. GW got to the line in the first half early and often and though it trailed 34-30 at the break, the Buff and Blue shot 10-of-12 from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes, while the Rams only got to the stripe four times. Five first half offensive rebounds also led to seven second chance points in a tight first half, when the lead changed hands six times and the score was knotted on four occasions. After his 30-point explosion last time out against Fordham, junior DJ Williams went into the locker room for the break with a game-high tying 10.
Alas, the iron was unkind in the second stanza and VCU ratcheted up the defense to limit GW to a 6-of-19 second half showing. Nevertheless, after VCU pushed an early second half lead to 12, when Williams canned a three-pointer with 1:55 to play, the Colonials found themselves within four. Despite only shooting 11-of-18 from the free throw line on the night, VCU saved its makes for the end as the visitors put the game away at the line by making their final six with under a minute to go. GW's game plan held true in the effort to make the Rams beat them from deep, as the Colonials forced VCU into a 3-of-20 shooting night from long range, but the club from down I-95 got enough inside with 34 points in the paint to come away with the A-10 win.
Williams finished with 16 to lead GW in the scoring column, while sophomore Maceo Jack was just behind with 14, and he added a team-high six rebounds to his night. Junior point guard Armel Potter netted 11 in his 25 minutes off the bench. For VCU, De'Riante Jenkins dropped in 14, while Marcus Santos-Silva double-doubled with 10 points and 11 rebounds against the undersized GW squad which continues to play without injured big man Arnaldo Toro. Marcus Evans chipped in 10 including four critical free throws down the stretch for his team's cause.
GW now turns its attention to Richmond for a revenge game on Saturday. After the Spiders stole one in DC, the Colonials will look to return the favor on Saturday. Tip-time from the Robins Center is 6 p.m. for the MASN telecast. GW returns home a week from tonight to face Saint Louis at 6:30 p.m. nationally on CBSSN.
