Meet Notes
Â
LEADING OFF: The George Washington gymnastics team will wrap up its home slate on Friday evening when it hosts BYU and Maryland for Senior Day at 7 p.m. in the Charles E. Smith Center.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials competed in a pair of meets over the weekend, first hosting Kent State, Towson and Eastern Michigan for Brownie and Girl Scout Day on Friday night before traveling to Kent, Ohio, for tri-meet action at Kent State with East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival NC State on Sunday. In both meets, the Colonials posted a 195.350, just .050 off their season high. In addition, nine gymnasts finished the weekend either matching or surpassing their career highs.
Â
SENIOR SALUTE: GW will celebrate its senior class of Brooke Bray, Alex Zois, Yurina Harada, Julia McLaughlin, student coach Remi Roberts and manager Lexi Napoli on Friday. The seniors have been instrumental in the GW gymnastics program's return to the NCAA Regionals in each of the past three seasons, the 2017 EAGL Championship, and a likely fifth consecutive trip to regionals this spring.Â
Â
THE FINAL WINEDOWN: Prior to march-outs at 7 p.m., GW will host "The Final Winedown," a wine tasting with light hors d'oeuvres inside the Colonials Club. The cost is $15 and includes the single-meet ticket along with an open bar with a selection of wines for fans of age.
Â
SHIFT TO NQS: This week's NCAA RoadToNationals.com rankings are the first of the season that take into account each team's National Qualifying Score (NQS). The NQS is based on a team's and all-around competitor's six best regular-season meet scores, of which three must be away. The high score is eliminated with the remaining five scores averaged. In former years, this was known as the Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), which was changed for the 2019 season to reflect the new postseason format.Â
Â
TRIPLE AAA: Fifth-year co-captain Alex Zois continues to dominate in all-around competition and posted a 39.200 on Friday evening and a season-high matching 39.300 on Sunday to win back-to-back all-around titles. The Crofton, Md., native earned her best score of the weekend on floor at GW's Brownie and Girl Scout Meet, recording a career-high matching 9.900 to finish in a tie for first place with first-year Olivia Zona. Zois also posted a season-high 9.875 on bars on Sunday, a score that earned her a spot at the top of the podium.Â
Â
195.000 CLUB: The Colonials posted back-to-back scores above the 195.000 threshold over the weekend, the first time they've done so this season. GW earned its first score above a 195.000 during its Pink Meet, posting a season-high 195.400 to finish first over UNH, Yale, and William & Mary. Over the weekend, the squad earned identical 195.350s behind a season-high 49.250 on floor on Friday and season-highs on vault (48.900) and beam (48.925) on Sunday.
Â
