The Colonials fell to the Rams, 80-53, on Tuesday night
KINGSTON, R.I. – The George Washington's men's basketball team was in Rhode Island on Tuesday night for the annual meeting between the visiting Buff and Blue and the host Rams. In what has been a competitive all-time series, and with the teams entering play just a game apart in the conference standings, GW hoped to pick up a key road win, especially with sophomore captain Justin Mazzulla making a homecoming to the state where he won a high school championship just two years ago.
The game started promisingly enough, as GW jumped out to the first lead with Javier Langarica netting the first bucket, and the Colonials held a lead or were tied through the game's first six minutes. That's when things changed for the visitors as after Rhode Island took its first lead at the 14:00 minute mark of the first half, it was all Rams from there in an eventual 80-53 win for the hosts.
Langarica finished with 14 points to lead GW, 12 of which came before halftime. He added 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season to help the Colonials control the boards, 36-29. No other Colonial was able to muster double digits in scoring, however, as DJ Williams (9 points) saw his streak of games in double figures snapped at 11.
The Rams saw three drop in 10 or more, led by Jeff Dowtin's 16. URI connected at a .542 clip from the field, assisting on 20 of 32 field goals, and hit .476 from three point range (10-of-21) to surge by GW, which couldn't find its stroke in a 0-for-11 performance from behind the arc.
With three games left in the regular season (vs. Saint Bonaventure, 3/2; at Fordham, 3/6; vs. George Mason, 3/9), the Colonials have work to do in the battle for seeding at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Brooklyn next month. Currently GW is slotted in the opening day of the tournament on Wednesday, March 13th.
