Men's water polo pair received ACWPC honorable mention recognition
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -Â In recognition of their standout play representing GW men's water polo this fall, Andrew Mavis and Andras Levai were tabbed as Honorable Mention All-Americans by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches on Tuesday.
Mavis earned All-American honors for the third time after tallying 76 goals and 74 ejections drawn in his final collegiate season, while Levai made the national list for the first time thanks to a career-best campaign in which he notched a team-high 150 points via 88 goals and 62 assists.
The pair helped the Colonials record 22 wins on the way to their fourth straight Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference final before finishing the season ranked No. 17 nationally.
"We are very happy for Andrew and Andras," GW head coach Barry King said. "Andrew has worked so hard to become one of the most effective and efficient centers in the East, and he really blossomed as a vocal leader for us this year. Andras was a fantastic teammate throughout the fall, not just scoring goals but also distributing the ball at a high rate.
"Both of them raised their level, and drove their teammates to do the same, particularly when Atakan (Destici) was out with an injury. They are the epitome of Determination, Commitment and Respect."
A force on both ends thanks to his size and strength in the middle, Mavis capped a tremendous career in Buff and Blue by earning All-Conference First Team honors and a spot on the All-MAWPC Championship First Team.
The Princeton, N.J., native, ranked second on the squad in goals by converting 48.7% of his attempts. He posted 21 multi-goal efforts over 31 games, highlighted by a pair of seven-goal outings to match his career high.
Mavis moves on with his place in GW history secure: He finished with 279 goals to rank third on the program's all-time list, and his 263 ejections drawn are a Buff and Blue record.
A proven playmaker on the left side, Levai was named to the All-Conference Second Team and All-MAWPC Championship First Team after a tremendous junior season. The Hungary native set career bests in goals, assists and points with all three totals ranking among GW's top-six all-time for a single season.
In addition to averaging 4.8 points per game, Levai paced the Colonials with 42 steals, plus nine field blocks. He showcased his defensive prowess in the MAWPC semifinal win over Fordham by grabbing eight steals to equal a career high.
Levai enters his senior season with 227 goals (eighth all-time), 172 assists (third) and 399 points (fourth).
Mavis and Levai were among 10 MAWPC student-athletes to be named ACWPC Division I All-Americans. It's the fourth straight season and seventh time in eight years that at least one Colonial has made the list.
